WhatsApp is introducing a groundbreaking privacy feature that will allow users to connect using usernames instead of phone numbers. This marks a significant change in how communication is conducted on the platform. The feature is currently being rolled out in stages, with users getting the opportunity to reserve unique usernames ahead of a comprehensive global launch anticipated later in the year. Once fully implemented, users will have the option to initiate chats using a username, keeping their mobile numbers private.
In this new system, users can generate a unique handle within the app. To message someone, only the username is required, and no phone number will be visible. If a particular username is already in use, WhatsApp will offer alternative suggestions through an integrated generator. Notably, there will be no public directory of usernames, ensuring that users cannot be randomly searched. Only those who know the exact username will be able to make contact.
To reserve a username, WhatsApp users need to update their app and navigate to Settings, then Account, and finally Username to check availability. Given the app’s massive user base, popular usernames are expected to be highly competitive, prompting early reservations. Users will receive notifications when the feature becomes available in their region.
As an additional layer of privacy, the system will feature an optional “username key,” providing a second level of security. This key can be shared separately, allowing users to control who can initiate conversations with them. This feature is designed to benefit not just personal users but also creators, businesses, and public accounts, enabling them to align their WhatsApp identities with existing handles on platforms like Instagram and Facebook.
WhatsApp assures users that adopting a username is optional; those who prefer using their phone numbers can continue to do so. Notifications will be sent within the app as the feature becomes available across different regions.
