In a call for de-escalation and diplomacy, UAE diplomatic adviser Anwar Gargash criticized Iran’s ongoing policy of targeting Gulf states and Jordan, labeling it a failed strategy. Gargash emphasized the need for realistic and sustainable political solutions to resolve the persistent regional conflict, which remains in a precarious state of “neither war nor peace.” He stressed the importance of reducing tensions immediately and resuming normal navigation through the crucial Strait of Hormuz.
The UAE’s stance comes amid renewed hostilities between Iran and the United States, which have seen fresh Iranian attacks on regional targets. On August 31, the UAE Ministry of Defence confirmed intercepting an Iranian drone over its territorial waters. Moreover, the ministry dismissed claims by Iranian media that Al Minhad Air Base near Dubai had been struck by missiles, asserting that the base remains fully operational and on high alert.
Gargash also criticized a prior memorandum of understanding, arguing that it failed to present a practical and viable roadmap to resolve the crisis. He called for any lasting agreement to address both the political and economic repercussions of the conflict, underscoring the urgency of finding a comprehensive resolution.
The strategic Strait of Hormuz remains at the heart of the dispute, with ongoing disruptions to maritime traffic threatening regional economies and global energy markets. Recent exchanges of attacks and counterattacks have heightened tensions, complicating efforts to restore safe passage for shipping and revive diplomatic talks.
