Peter Cullen, the iconic Canadian voice actor renowned for bringing life to characters like Optimus Prime from Transformers and Eeyore from Winnie the Pooh, has passed away at the age of 85. He died peacefully on Wednesday at his Los Angeles home, surrounded by his family, as per a statement released by his loved ones.
Born in Montreal, Cullen’s career began in Canadian television and radio before he became a beloved figure in the voice acting industry. He first lent his voice to Optimus Prime in the 1984 animated series Transformers, a role he reprised in seven major films from 2007 to 2023, as well as multiple spin-offs. His portrayal of the wise and heroic leader of the Autobots left an indelible mark on fans around the world.
Cullen was also affectionately known for his portrayal of Eeyore, the downcast donkey from Winnie the Pooh. He first voiced the character in The New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh and continued to do so in various television series, films, and video games. His ability to imbue Eeyore with a unique blend of melancholy and charm endeared him to audiences across generations.
In addition to these roles, Cullen’s distinct voice work included portraying KARR, the villainous counterpart to KITT, in the popular series Knight Rider. He also created the iconic clicking sounds of the alien creature in the 1987 film Predator and voiced King Kong in the 1976 remake. His diverse range of performances showcased his versatility and talent in the field of voice acting.
Cullen attributed much of his portrayal of Optimus Prime to his older brother Larry, a former US Marine Corps captain, who inspired him to craft the character as a true hero—strong but not aggressive. Cullen’s contribution to entertainment earned him a Daytime Emmy nomination in 2011 and a lifetime achievement award at the Children’s & Family Emmy Awards in 2023. His work continues to resonate, securing his place as a cherished figure in popular culture.
