Bahrain and France have taken significant steps to bolster their strategic partnership, with a focus on defence, energy, and technology. During official talks, Bahrain’s King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa and French President Emmanuel Macron discussed expanding cooperation in these areas to advance shared economic and security interests.
The meeting highlighted the progress achieved in their bilateral relations, particularly following a defence cooperation agreement signed earlier this year in France. This agreement sets the groundwork for enhanced collaboration in security, technology, trade, and cultural exchanges. The leaders also explored joint projects in energy, industry, and transportation, including proposed railway connectivity within the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries.
King Hamad and President Macron underscored the importance of strengthening defence and security ties to ensure regional stability. King Hamad condemned recent attacks by Houthi forces on Saudi Arabia, expressing solidarity with the kingdom. He lauded France’s support for maritime security and regional peace efforts, while Macron reiterated France’s commitment to coordinating on defence and security matters.
Energy security emerged as a crucial topic, with an emphasis on reliable energy supplies and regional cooperation. A memorandum of understanding was signed between Bahrain and France on peaceful nuclear energy, aiming to develop civilian nuclear expertise through training and knowledge-sharing initiatives.
The discussions also addressed ongoing regional and international developments, with both leaders exchanging views on the Middle East situation and strategies to tackle regional challenges. King Hamad emphasized the need for lasting peace built on respect for sovereignty and international law, advocating for a two-state solution to the Palestinian issue.
During the visit, King Hamad honored President Macron with the Collar of the Order of Shaikh Isa bin Salman Al Khalifa, Exceptional Class, recognizing his role in strengthening bilateral ties. The meeting reaffirmed both nations’ commitment to deepening their strategic partnership and expanding cooperation across various sectors.
