Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi has urged Iran and the United States to exercise restraint and resume diplomatic negotiations to ease ongoing tensions, during a meeting with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi in Beijing. Wang emphasized that the conflict does not benefit the involved nations or the broader international community.
In the discussions, Wang called on both Washington and Tehran to adhere to their existing memorandum of understanding and rebuild a negotiation framework based on previous agreements. He also stressed the importance of keeping the Strait of Hormuz open for international shipping, noting its significance for global energy supplies and supply chains.
Wang further encouraged regional countries to prevent the conflict from affecting neighboring areas, such as Yemen and the Red Sea, advocating for dialogue and negotiations as means to resolve disputes. Araghchi echoed this sentiment, expressing Iran’s willingness to return to diplomatic channels while safeguarding its national interests.
The Iranian foreign minister affirmed Tehran’s recognition of the current memorandum with the U.S. and expressed readiness to collaborate with regional countries to enhance relations and security. Additionally, Araghchi welcomed China’s initiatives aimed at strengthening peace and security in the Middle East and expressed a desire to deepen cooperation with Beijing.
