Iran has accused Qatar of hindering its investigation into the whereabouts of three Iranian pilots who reportedly disappeared during a recent conflict. The Iranian government claims that efforts to explore the situation are being obstructed by Qatar, which denies any detention of the pilots. An official from the Iranian armed forces, Mohammad Bagherzadeh, stated that an expert team from the Iranian Air Force has been awaiting permission for months to travel to Qatar to conduct an investigation. He appealed to Qatar to grant access for the team and also called on the International Committee of the Red Cross to intervene.
During a previous incident, Iran reported the recovery of the body of pilot Majid Kazemi, who was killed in an attack that involved the US Al Udeid Air Base located in Qatar. In response to the allegations, Majed al-Ansari, spokesperson for Qatar’s Foreign Ministry, firmly denied that the Iranian pilots were being held in Qatar. He explained that the pilots had allegedly violated Qatari airspace, prompting defensive actions after attempts to communicate with them were unsuccessful. Al-Ansari added that Qatari search and rescue teams had actively conducted operations to find the pilots and recover remains.
Qatar further noted that it had coordinated with Iran to transfer the remains of the recovered pilot. Additionally, Qatari officials stated that Iran had been invited in April to dispatch a team to Qatar for more information regarding the search and rescue operations, but claimed that Iran had not responded to the invitation.
This dispute arises amidst ongoing tensions involving Iran, the United States, and other regional countries following the conflict’s onset earlier this year. Despite these tensions, Qatar has maintained a significant diplomatic role, striving to mitigate conflicts and facilitate dialogue among the involved parties.
