Talk of an imminent US-Russia summit has cooled significantly, with both nations aligning on a new message: “no immediate plans.”
A US official, speaking anonymously, confirmed Tuesday that no meeting was scheduled for the “immediate future.” The Kremlin’s spokesperson separately stated there is “no precise timeframe” for a summit.
This is a sharp turnaround from last week, when President Trump announced a Budapest meeting “within two weeks” following a call with Vladimir Putin.
That announcement led to a “productive” phone call on Monday between US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.
Despite the call, the US official said no further in-person diplomatic meeting was “necessary,” effectively pausing the summit plans. This comes as Trump was also scheduled to meet Ukraine’s president to discuss providing Tomahawk missiles.
