In a diplomatic maneuver akin to a “full-court press,” Europe’s leaders have converged on Washington to apply maximum support for Ukraine. They are in the city to stand with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy before his meeting with Donald Trump, who is expected to advocate for a pro-Russia peace settlement.
The goal of this “bodyguard” mission is to leave no doubt in the White House about Europe’s unified position. The allies are determined to prevent Trump from strong-arming Zelenskyy into a deal that would require Kyiv to cede territory, a scenario they view as disastrous.
The pressure will be applied from all angles. NATO chief Mark Rutte will use his well-practiced charm and flattery. EU chief Ursula von der Leyen will highlight the economic stakes and her vision for a strong, “indigestible” Ukraine. The leaders of France and Germany will present the core strategic arguments against the plan.
Meanwhile, leaders with personal connections, like Italy’s Giorgia Meloni and Finland’s Alexander Stubb, will work their private channels. The UK’s Keir Starmer will provide a constant, visible show of personal support for Zelenskyy. It is a comprehensive strategy designed to cover all bases and ensure the best possible outcome for Ukraine.
